F-20 upgrade proposal

Introduction

While I have originally done an F-5 upgrade due to its simplicity and consequental export potential for third world countries, it was brought to my attention that F-20 does have more potential.

F-20 overview

2 × LAU-10 rocket pods with 4 × Zuni 5 in (127 mm) rockets each Or

2 × Matra rocket pods with 18× SNEB 68 mm rockets each

Missiles: 2× AIM-9 Sidewinders on wingtip launch rails (similar to F-16 and F/A-18)

AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missiles on hardpoints

Bombs: Various air-to-ground ordnance such as Mark 80 series of unguided iron bombs (including 3 kg and 14 kg practice bombs), CBU-24/49/52/58 cluster bomb munitions, M129 Leaflet bomb

Upgrade

Engine

Since both F404 and F414 have identical dimensions, new F-20 upgrade proposal will use F414EPE, which offers 26.400 lbf (117,4 kN, 11.975 kgf) of thrust. F404 and F414 have identical dimensions, but F414 is 73 kg heavier, at 1.109 kg vs F404s 1.036 kg.

Weight gain: 73 kg.

Weapons

F-5s two M39 cannons will be replaced by a single GIAT 30. M39 = 80,9 kg * 2, GIAT 30 = 120 kg, weight loss 41,8 kg.

Ammunition weight will stay the same weight albeit at reduced capacity.

Other systems

New F-20 will be equipped with Skyward-G IRST, which will add 55 kg.

Laser transciever will add 4,7 kg.

Radar warners will add 8 kg.

Laser warners will add 4 kg.

MAWS will add 8,8 kg.

Four countermeasure dispensers will add 8 kg.

Flares and decoys will add 43,4 kg.

Jammer will add 5,9 kg.

Data link will add 29,9 kg.

Removing radar will remove 72,6 kg.

Weight gain: 95,1 kg

Net weight gain is 126,3 kg.

    • Not only clost, but maintenance requirements / sortie rate as well. In other words, even if F-20 is cheaper (which is actually likely), FLX may well provide greater force presence. And yes, FLX is significantly superior on a platform basis.

  1. On the subject of planes that never got to see the light of service and production, what are your thoughts about the F11F Super Tiger?

  2. I LIKE your F-20 upgrade proposal! Just the engine change alone would make it even more of a kick-ass, lightweight fighter. With all your other upgrades, the F-20 could be a great, reliable, simple, lightweight fighter…
